Graeter's Ice Cream

Another Serious Graeter's Fan!

It’s no secret that Graeter’s Ice Cream has some diehard fans. Maria, a Cincinnati native, is no exception:

“I grew up in Cincinnati, and every time we had something to celebrate (music recital, basketball game, swim meet, first communion, etc) we headed to Graeter's. We introduced all our out-of-town relatives to the ice cream, and it quickly became a must-visit.

I went to UC for college, which meant I became very familiar with the Clifton scoop shop. At some point one of my friends and I wandered into Graeter's and he asked me what I recommended. As I began to rattle off my favorite flavors (and there are many) he asked, "What about the Peanut Butter Chip?"

"Oh, it's good but it has milk chocolate, not dark chocolate chips, so I don't get it very often."

At this point the girl behind the counter turned to me and asked, "Did you work here once?"

My friend and I had a good laugh (as the answer to the question was no, just well over 15 years of tasting experience) and enjoyed our ice cream, as I do to this day”

Thanks for your kind words, Maria! We are happy to hear you conitnue to visit our ice cream shops for a scoop of our gourmet ice cream!

July is National Ice Cream Month!

Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month? It’s true! A whole month dedicated to this delicious treat!

President Ronald Reagan declared July National Ice Cream Month in 1984, stating that ice cream was “fun and nutritious and enjoyed by 90% of the population.” Whatever you say, Mr. President! Maybe you were already celebrating National Ice Cream Month, but are you celebrating your favorite flavor day?

July 7th National Chocolate Ice Cream Day
July 15th  National Strawberry Ice Cream Day
July 17th National Peach Ice Cream Day
July 20th National Ice Cream Day
July 23rd National Vanilla Ice Cream Day
July 25th National Hot Fudge Sundae Day

You have plenty more days to celebrate National Ice Cream Month! Come celebrate with Graeter’s gourmet ice cream!

It's hard to narrow it down to just 10, but here are some things to check out if you come through town...

More food -- Yes, we are known for our chili, and if you come to town, you have to at least try Skyline, Gold Star or Price Hill Chili. And you should check out Graeter's, the best ice cream around. But branch out and try places like Sugar N' Spice, an institution for more than 70 years, for an outstanding diner breakfast; Melt for delicious vegetarian and meat lunch options; Tom + Chee for every kind of grilled cheese you could ever want; and Dewey's for gourmet pizza. True foodies can try the Dinner Club at Nectar, an entire dinner focused on a local, seasonal ingredient such as bread or chocolate."

Cincinnati's Frozen Gem: Graeter's Ice Cream

Thank you to blogger Amanda Appiarius for sharing her wonderful post about Graeter's. Amanda just recently move from Cincinnati to San Francisco and misses her favorite frozen treat in Cincinnati. Take a moment and read the delightful article about Graeter's French Pot Process and what Amanda calls, "The Pint Experience"

Buttery Affair

Cincinnati's Frozen Gem: Graeter's Ice Cream

Ice Cream the old fashioned way.
Glorious chunks of chocolate hidden in folds of creamy ecstasy.
A heavy texture that will dominate all other ice creams you have ever loved.

This is Graeter’s : Homebase : Cincinnati.

Graeter’s makes their uniquely magnificent ice cream via the French Pot process – 2 measly yet powerfully seductive gallons at a time. Their recipe is fresh cream and egg swirled in a French Pot Freezer. This is where the thickening happens (and oh boy, Greater’s is thick, dense, untouchably perfect). A blade scrapes the freezing cream from the sides of the pot, letting the ice cream layer onto itself, one preciously smooth fold after another. This locks out all of that unwanted air, compacting the rich denseness. Their pint weighs in at about a pound. Um…yea so I guess that means I’ve eaten a pound of ice cream in one sitting once before…a couple times, a few times…whatever. Details are not important here – the point is – uh. Yum. Anyway after this scraping business they add the chunks. of chocolate. Graeter’s pours their own liquid chocolate into the spinning pot at the very end of the process. They then break the chocolate into the Chips. Chips of beautifully grotesque massiveness. Chips of perfect melt on your tongue tininess. This velvety result with its mammoth gems is hand-packed into those nearly 1lb pints. Pints that simply do not exist in the city of San Francisco. Grr.

Let me just walk you through the Graeter’s Pint Experience.
You peel off the lid to find a sleek finish of tightly packed ice cream. You skim off the smooth top, slowly cutting the thick, cold treat with the edge of your spoon. It curls off easily into fat, melty pieces that you let linger on your tongue. Occasionally you’ll hit a chip, suck on it, bite it and let the rich chocolate contrast the flavor of the ice cream. The creaminess calms your throat, your mind, your soul as you dig deeper. The longer the pint is in your hand, the more it starts to melt and the better it gets. You dig around the sides of the pint, picking up the melted milkiness and mixing it with the soft ice cream for perfect soothing bites. The flavor never dies, the ice cream continues to soften and mix with the melted edges until suddenly, after this big chip here, the small one there, the delicious creamy bite here and the last silky bite there…it’s gone? Scrape scrape. No more? Scrape the remaining meltiness. All gone. Oh no, did I just ate a pint? Guess my Daddy taught me well!

Lucky for Amanda, Graeter's continues to grow and may be on it's way to San Francisco! Stay tuned... Looking for Graeter's where you live? Visit our website to search for a store near you!

A True Graeter's Fan

Roy Franks, or Scooter as his friends and family know him, is originally from Cincinnati. He is a true fan of Graeter’s and it shows in his story.

When Scooter retired and moved to Santa Fe, NM he didn’t let it get in the way of his love for Graeter’s. Scooter and his wife had their favorite Graeter’s flavors shipped right to their doorstep as they couldn’t imagine living without it. Then, in 2010, they were overwhelmed to learn their local grocer started carrying Graeter’s! This was a sight to see, Graeter’s in Smith’s!

Scooter’s reaction, of course, was that he had to support Graeter’s being sold in Smith’s to ensure it didn’t get discontinued. Scooter has hosted 2 ice cream socials for his neighbors over the past 3 months! His passion to share his love for Graeter’s shows!

We recently heard Scooter’s story when it was brought to our attention that he held an ice cream social for his local Smith’s grocery store staff! We are told that Scooter has become somewhat of a local celebrity spokesperson for Graeter’s in his community! Scooter is truly committed to Graeter’s ongoing success in Santa Fe, New Mexico!

We love to hear stories like Scooter's. Our fans willingness to help spread the word is very important to us in our desire to establish and grow the Graeter's brand- just as we've grown over the years in Cincinnati. From the beginning our success has been measured one satisfied customer at a time.

Graeter’s is growing, but the way we make our ice cream will never change!

Graeter’s can be found in more than 6,000 grocery stores. Find a grocery store selling Graeter’s near you and learn more at

Graeter's can now be found in over 6,000 grocery stores across the country and with each new market, we hear about our biggest fans spreading the word where they live. We love to hear these stories and love to share them even more!

Once fans found out about Graeter's availability in Stop & Shop, we found blog posts and Facebook comments from fans excitedly talking about the news!

One blog post we came across was by John Stoehr. John talks about how Graeter's is a staple Cincinnati food and being from Cincinnati himself, he truly understood the obsession.

I don’t mean that Cincinnati was devoid of other ice cream. I mean if you had access to Graeter’s, you didn’t think about the others. You were faithful. Tried and true. Like Romeo.

So go ahead, enjoy John's blog post and do as he says, "I urge you run – run! – to Stop & Shop. And soon. Graeter’s arrived last week."

Sherryn Daniel's Blog- Ice Cream Social

Sherryn Daniel is an experienced online writer who enjoys sharing her passion for traveling and delicious food in her blog, Sherryn Daniel’s Blog.

We first came accross Sherryn's blog after she held an ice cream social and shared her love for Graeter's with some friends. Check out the following blog post to read about her event from last April.

Sherynn Daniel

A few weeks back, I wanted to celebrate the start of spring by throwing an adequate sized ice cream social.  Since I only wanted to invite friends who were professionals in the D.C/ MD/ VA area, I only wanted to serve them the best ice cream I could possibly find. I nixed the idea of driving to any grocery store since no grocers in the area serves tasty, gourmet ice cream.

So, I decided to order a few pints of Graeters (and I accidentally got everyone .. Click here to read more.

A Truly “Fabulous” Food Show

Anxious Graeter's Ice Cream Samplers at the 2011 Fabulous Foods Show

We had the amazing opportunity to participate in the 2011 Fabulous Food Show in Cleveland last weekend, and take it from me, it was every bit as fabulous as the name promises.

We sampled our Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip and Vanilla Ice Cream flavors to thousands of foodies (18,000 over the weekend) and I was thrilled to see hundreds lining up to try the best ice cream you’ll ever taste.

Of course, Graeter’s did not disappoint.  First-bite reactions were downright entertaining and one guest even dropped to her knees in ecstasy after tasting our signature Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip for the first time.

We also had the pleasure of meeting and serving Graeter's to several of the talented celebrity chefs that were on hand. We knew they'd be pleased with our ice cream ingredients.

Cleveland's own Iron Chef and successful restaurateur, Chef Michael Symon, exclaimed, “Graeter’s is the best ice cream ever!”

Dessert chef Anne Thorton of Food Network fame said, “Thank you for making my favorite ice cream.”

Upon learning that Graeter’s would be available in NYC this Spring, long-time Graeter's fan Chef Bobby Flay said that he was “looking forward to eating Graeter’s in NYC!”

Chef Jason Roberts, from ABC's "The Chew"

And my favorite new friend, Chef Jason Roberts, from ABC's The Chew, showed his love for Graeter's by devouring no less than three big bowls of Black Raspberry Chip that I scooped for him in between cooking demonstrations.  There is no better compliment than a request for seconds, and in this case, thirds!

A big thank you to all the Graeter’s fans that came out to the event, and to our new fans, welcome to the Graeter’s family!

Introduction to Greta

Dear bakery lovers of Cincinnati,Greta and her delicious baked goods

My name is Greta. I am the head baker for Graeter's. I love baking and have been baking in Cincinnati for a very very long time. I don't know why but some people thought I would be a good spokesman for the Graeter's bakery and there were advertising people following me around for a week. They wrote down a lot of things I said and took some pictures of me. Now I see my picture in the stores. I get very embarrassed when people recognize me at the bank, post office and market. I wish I could carry cheese crowns around in my purse for everyone that recognizes me but they would smush and I work too hard to give away stuff that isn't fresh. Please stop asking for my baked treats, it breaks my heart when I have to say no.

The handsome advertising men want me to write about what I do. I don't know why. It's pretty ordinary and I am not very fast at typing. I took typing lessons just after the war but never typed a lot after that. I am good at taking short hand though. I would take shorthand for Wilmer Graeter then write his letters. He always thought handwritten notes were better than using a typewriter.

I wish they would have picked a different week for me to start this. See Thanksgiving is soon and we are very busy baking pies, butter bits and a bunch of other goodies. The holidays are my favorite time of the year but boy are we busy. We bake and bake and bake.

I hope you put in your order in for Thanksgiving. The cutoff time is today. Remember that everyone likes second helpings of pie.

Well I have to go now, the oven buzzer for the pumpkin pies is about to go off. I hope you and your family has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and everyone saves room for dessert.

Love, Greta

P.S. Thank you Steve Hellmich for helping me put a picture on here. These fancy computers confuse me sometimes.
